VISION

The Biomedical Engineering Department at FIU will be the prime resource for biomedical engineering education, training, research, and technology development in Florida; and be nationally recognized as a model for servicing the needs of the clinical medicine and the biomedical industries through workforce and technology development.

MISSION

The mission of the Biomedical Engineering Department is to integrate academia, clinical medicine, and the biomedical industry

In the education and training of the next generation of biomedical engineers;
In research and development activities leading to innovations in medical technology;
In transfer of that medical technology to commercialization and clinical implementation;
In the continuing development of biomedical engineering as a profession, its impact on the delivery of health care, and its role in the sustainability and growth of the local and national economies.

Description of Programs

Students in FIU's biomedical engineering academic programs gain valuable interdisciplinary experience in clinical and industrial environments, making them top choices for employment with local industry partners.

Students can choose from a variety of program options:

PhD in Biomedical Engineering
BS in Biomedical Engineering
Undergraduate Minor in Biomedical Engineering
Combined BS/MS Five-Year Program
Two-track MS in Biomedical Engineering:
...........Professional MS in Biomedical Engineering or

Biomedical Engineering Degree Programs

Clinical Rotations

Very few biomedical engineering programs offer students a clinical rotation. Through our partnership with the premier clinical establishments in South Florida, our students are introduced to applications and real life situations associated with the use of medical devices and instruments in clinical medicine.
As a national and international center for quality health care, South Florida is home to numerous hospitals and health care institutions offering partnership opportunities.

Real Biomedical Industry Experience

Another unique aspect is the industry internships or entrepreneurship experience offered to students enrolled in the program. Students participate in real industry projects, enabling them to apply classroom lessons in project management and business plan development, exposing them to regulatory and legal issues specific to the biomedical industry, and introducing them to prospective employers.

Affordable, Convenient Program

FIU is home to the only public biomedical engineering program in South Florida. It is not only an outstanding academic choice, but also the most affordable one. Classes are conveniently held within the College of Engineering in FIU's Engineering Center - a 245,000-square-foot commercial research facility located on the expansive 36-acre Engineering campus at W. Flagler Street and 107th Avenue.

ABET

The Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) accredits engineering programs on a nationwide basis. Students wishing more information about accreditation should consult their respective departmental office or the Office of the Dean. The following baccalaureate engineering programs in the college are accredited by ABET, Inc., Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering
and Mechanical Engineering.
