Wallace H. Coulter Young Inventors Research Award
The Young Inventor Award (YIA) was established as an annual competition to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship and inspire young inventors seeking to apply the promise of technology to advance medical research and the delivery of medicine. The YIA consists of a stipend and the resources necessary to support a specific project. It is expected that the Young Inventor Program will be a catalyst for the biomedical industry in South Florida and fuel efforts in start-up companies. This award is supported by a $1.5 million endowment from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation. $75,000 per year is available to provide salary stipend and project funds. The Department provides space and access to professors, researchers, and equipment.
The target audience for this award is recent PhD (or similar doctorate degree) recipients in biomedical engineering or a related area who aspire for a career in biomedical engineering research and development with a focus on translational research. Before the beginning of the award period, all recipients of this award must have received their PhD degree, but no more than eight years should have passed since the award of the PhD. The Mentor of the Awardee must be a FIU Biomedical Engineering faculty member.
The award is for a period of one year, and can be renewed for a second year if sufficient progress is being made. A FIU BME YIA committee, consisting of the Chair of the Department, at least one BME faculty member (who is not a potential Mentor), and at least one member of the BME Advisory Board, will choose the recipients and make decisions on second year renewals.
Awardees
2006-2008: Dr. Banghe Zhu. Project title “Fluorescence-Enhanced Optical Imaging and Tomography: Towards Early-Stage Breast Cancer Diagnosis”
2008-2010: Romila Manchanda. Project title “Image guided therapy using targeted polymeric drug delivery systems”
2010- : Lana Norman Project title “A novel miniaturized implantable biosensor to investigate and understand the progress of Alzheimer’s disease in real time.

Fall 2012 |
| Azael Sarmiento: Graduated from Coral Gables Senior High.
I joined the BME department because of the excellent preparation it would give me for an engineering job position in the medical field and the many opportunities offered such as the FIUBME-CUES scholarship. This scholarship was particularly attractive because it was awarded based on merit and more than one student could be the recipient. Alex Williams: Graduated from Oak Ridge High in Orlando. I applied for the scholarship because I thought it would be a perfect fit since it was exclusively for my major. I joined the BME division since I figured the best kind of machine was the body. Daniel Guyton: Graduated from Miami Coral Park Senior High School. The reason I joined the BME department was that I enjoy the combination of sciences utilized in Biomedical Engineering, and I applied for this scholarship to help pay for my classes, since all of my classes are paid for by scholarships. Daniel Rodriguez: Graduated Everglades High School. I joined the BME Department because biomedical engineering is a growing field that has new discoveries every day. I applied for the scholarship to use the award to help me take more classes and to use it as a stepping stone to get to know the department better. Gabrielle Clark: Graduated East River High School Orlando, FL I joined the BME department because I enjoy math, science, design, and helping people. I applied for this scholarship because I need the financial assistance in helping me to obtain my degree in Bio-medical engineering |

FIU Minority Opportunities in Biomedical Research Programs
(MBRS Rise fellowships )
The MBRS RISE program at FIU is sponsored by a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant. The goal of the RISE program is to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups in biomedical and behavioral research who enter into and successfully complete Ph.D. programs in these fields.
