Congratulations to Pratikkumar Shah ( member of Alpha Eta Mu Beta, the biomedical Engineering Society) , who has been awarded as an outstanding member of the year at Council of Student Organization Banquet held on 17th February at GC Ballrooms, FIU.

Pratik was nominated by AEMB for the outstanding member award by AEMB at the CSO award ceremony.

Pratik is a fairly new inductee of AEMB, but has already shown the traits. He has both the outstanding academic record and active involvement in our  society. He is an ever present member at all events and meetings, not only showing a keen interest, but always actively participating with a friendly demeanor, and volunteering at the events. He has been a great help in organizing various AEMB events during 2012-2013. Pratik has distinguished himself by being one of the most passionate and enthusiastic members during meetings, giving many ideas to not only improve our upcoming events, but also persuade eligible members to join, and become active in the chapter.  Apart from his contribution to chapter events, he is a very amiable and helpful person who believes in teamwork and brings positive energy to any group activity. He has always taken time to assist our undergraduate members with their research goals and presented himself as a role model with his hard work and dedication to his own research.

Because of all these qualities he was awarded as a Outstanding Chapter member award. Once again congratulations to Pratikkumar Shah.

Rupak Dua, won the UGS Provost Award for Graduate Student Engagement.

Rupak Dua, won the UGS Provost Award for Graduate Student Engagement, one of the prestigious award that is given to one graduate student once a year.

The UGS Provost Award for Graduate Student Engagement recognizes nominees who have, in conjunction with graduate faculty, demonstrated significant local, regional, or global community engagement initiative(s) with a community partner that has led to demonstrable community impacts

Rupak Dua, started an  initiative for an educational outreach program with Miami West Middle School under the guidance of his club faculty advisor Dr Anthony McGoron, and with the help of Stephanie Strange who is the director of the Office of Student Access and Success in engineering center, FIU. This program took a great shape in Feb,2013. Rupak along with his fellow colleague (Vishal Rampershad) went to middle school and organized their club first workshop, with around 120 small children listening to us with all their dreams in their eye. The main aim for their workshop was to make them aware of higher education and  make students interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Other than this program, Rupak  has in  the past have participated in community events such as the “Susan G Komen Race” to benefit cancer research, and the “Cystic Fibrosis Walk”, American heart association walk. Every year, at engineering campus of FIU organizes The Engineering expo at engineering center. As a part  of this expo school students are given a tour of FIU labs, and they are shown the miracles of engineering  that make them interested not only  in engineering but also in the field of sciences. Rupak have been working as an ambassador for the past 5 years and worked in the spirit of motivating these students to strive for something extraordinary.

Rupak is an organ donor and  has always try to participate in the medical research where they need human volunteers to conducts experiment to benefit the community as a whole.

He has been actively involved in the events held in the department and is the president of Alpha Eta Mu Beta, who recently won the overall outstanding organization award at FIU.

UGS was impressed by his engagement in all these activities at a graduate level, so he was awarded with the Provost award.

The Alpha Eta Mu Beta, the Biomedical Engineering honor society – FIU Chapter has grown immensely since it was created in 2007 with only ten members. In 2009, 2010 and 2011, 2012 AEMB, won the “Most Active Chapter Award” from the National Alpha Eta Mu Beta organization, and during the past year AEMB have continued to thrive and have become even more active.

Florida International University has approximately 38,000 registered students and 200 active student organizations. In Spring 2012, AEMB FIU won the outstanding organization in the Honors Community in the entire FIU campus.

And this academic year under the presidentship of Rupak Dua, it has won the overall outstanding organization award at the CSO banquet held on  17th April, 2013. Given that AEMB, FIU chapter only have 22 current active members, this is a tremendous achievement.

The philosophy of their E-Board has always emphasized that the strength of the society is in its members, and they are proud to say that most of the students who are inducted into AEMB remain involved in their chapter after induction and participate in their  activities on a regular basis. This is why they are able to put many events together and be a visible force on campus. Their student body also includes a variety of undergraduates and graduates with different interests and goals who have been able to form lasting bonds. One of the strengths of AEMB FIU chapter is that both undergraduates and graduates are well represented, acknowledged, and encouraged to share activities and network with each other.

Once again congratulations to AEMB for winning the overall outstanding organization award among all clubs at FIU

Rupak is currently a Ph.D. student in the Biomedical Engineering department at FIU working under Dr Sharan Ramaswamy. His current research focuses on the enhanced anchorage of tissue engineered cartilage with the native tissue.

He presented his work in 2013 ASME Global Congress on Nano Engineering for Medicine and Biology, which was held from Feb 4 – Feb  6, 2013 in Boston, MA. The conference was focused on the integration of Engineering, Materials Science, and Nanotechnology in addressing fundamental problems in Biology and Medicine and in developing devices, materials and methods for the early detection, imaging of pathological and physiological mechanisms, and treatment of disease.

At the conference, he won  an Outstanding Paper Award in the graduate student paper competition for his work and presentation.

Dr. Sharan Ramaswamy

Congratulations to
Dr. Sharan Ramaswamy
for being honored as a 2013 Top Scholar.

He was recognized for being elected Fellow of the American Heart Association and his service to the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences. Dr. Ramaswamy’s research interests are investigating the mechanical regulation of stem cells in cardiovascular regenerative medicine, heart valve tissue engineering and experimental/computational studies of flow dynamics in vascular/valve implants.

Pratikkumar Shah who is the member of AEMB , won the  CSO Outstanding Member Award for the 2012-2013 term, for his enthusiasm and  active participation in all the AEMB events.

Congratulations to our members and eboard for all their help and contributions that have made Alpha Eta Mu Beta Biomedical Honor society one of the best and active society on campus.
